Southwestern returned to the Student Center on Tuesday night for its ICCAC opener, falling 73–53 to visiting Iowa Western. The Spartans battled through stretches of disciplined half-court defense and saw a number of young contributors show growth, but an early shooting drought created a deficit they were never able to erase.
Iowa Western built a 34–22 halftime lead behind timely perimeter shooting and second-chance scoring. Southwestern countered with spurts of ball movement and defensive pressure, but the Reivers' ability to string together multi-possession runs proved decisive. SWCC shot 36.7 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from three, numbers that never quite matched the team's shot quality.
Freshman guard Myles Opare provided a spark off the bench, finishing with a team-high 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Alec Belter continued his steady presence inside, totaling 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Luka Lattenstein added efficient minutes with 6 points, while Micah Hines chipped in 6 points and 3 boards. The Spartans assisted on 12 of their 22 field goals and won several hustle sequences, but Iowa Western's 39–30 rebounding advantage and 18 made free throws tilted the night.
The loss moves Southwestern to 2–5 overall and 0–1 in ICCAC play. The Spartans now shift their focus to a challenging road test at Ellsworth on December 3. With continued development from the rotation and improved execution in late-clock situations, SWCC aims to take a meaningful step forward as league action ramps up.
