Southwestern men's basketball found the resolve it needed on the road Saturday afternoon, rallying late to secure an 80–75 victory over Neosho County in Chanute, Kansas. The win caps a steady, composed performance for a Spartan group that continues to show growth in November.
The afternoon belonged to sophomore guard Justine De La Cruz, who delivered a blistering 30-point effort on 12-of-21 shooting, including six makes from beyond the arc. His scoring stretches steadied Southwestern each time Neosho threatened to create separation, and his composure in the final minutes proved decisive.
Southwestern (80) shot an efficient 57.7 percent from the floor and 47.6 percent from deep, using balanced production around De La Cruz to withstand Neosho's physicality. Forward Alec Belter posted a strong two-way outing with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds, anchoring the Spartans on the glass. Micah Hines added 11 points, six rebounds, and seven assists, serving as a reliable connector on both ends. Luka Pecelj provided a spark as well, scoring 10 points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting clip.
The Spartans trailed 40–38 at halftime but tightened defensively in the second half, holding the Panthers to 35 points while converting timely baskets on the other end. Despite Neosho's 30–rebound effort and a 21-point outing from Cooper Weeks, Southwestern controlled the tempo late, committing to efficient possessions and poised decision-making.
Head coach Darryl Fletcher praised his group's resolve afterward. "It was a good road win. Loved seeing my guys deal with adversity and pull out a win," Fletcher said. "We still have several things we need to work on this week before we play NCMC, but love the progress we are making."
Southwestern returns home Saturday for a matchup with North Central Missouri College as the Spartans look to build on their early-season momentum and continue tightening the details that have fueled their encouraging start.
