Southwestern women's basketball found its rhythm in Ankeny over the weekend, securing two hard-nosed victories at the Faith Classic. The Spartans defeated Central Christian College of the Bible (58–49) on Thursday before closing the event with a resilient 45–37 win over Manhattan Christian College on Friday. The pair of wins moves Southwestern to 3–3 on the season and provides needed momentum following a challenging stretch.
The opener against Central Christian showcased one of the Spartans' most balanced offensive efforts of the season. Fantine Adgnot and Jaide McPhee each tallied 12 points, anchoring a lineup that saw eight different players score. Tammy Scott and Roslynn Huston added 8 points apiece, pairing their scoring with strong interior play. Scott led the rebounding effort with eight boards, while McPhee and Huston each collected seven.
Southwestern dictated the game by forcing 22 turnovers and maintaining quarter-by-quarter control, winning all four periods. The ball movement was crisp and decisive—19 assists on 22 field goals—with Adgnot and Jordyn Hall each handing out four. The combination of defensive pressure and offensive sharing ensured the Spartans held steady even as CCCB kept the margin tight throughout.
Friday morning's matchup with Manhattan Christian required a different kind of toughness. Manhattan opened with a 17–14 first-quarter lead, but Southwestern responded with a decisive 10–2 second period, flipping the game in its favor. From there, the Spartans' defense and rebounding carried the day.
Three players reached double figures, led by McPhee's 12 points. Adgnot added 10, while Hall delivered one of the weekend's standout performances—a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double paired with a team-high five assists. Huston controlled the glass with 11 rebounds, helping Southwestern win the rebounding battle by a wide margin.
The victory capped a two-day display of composure and balance. Southwestern finished the Classic with 31 total assists across the two games and demonstrated improved defensive discipline, particularly in the half court.
After the weekend sweep, Head Coach Kori Zarzutzki praised her team's resiliency.
"I'm really proud of the team for their energy and toughness in both of these games. Both were close games, and the team stayed composed in doing what they needed to on back-to-back days. It was a great trip to bounce back."
