Colorado native Ty Curry is edging back toward home, while stepping into the head role in women’s basketball at Southwestern Community College in Creston and leaving Richard Bland College in Virginia.

Curry is currently the interim head women’s basketball coach, as well as an adjunct professor at Richard Bland in Prince George County, Virginia. He has coached and taught at Richard Bland since June 2024. In his interim coaching role, he oversees all aspects of program operations, including budgeting, scheduling, travel, and compliance. During his time at Richard Bland, the team made the Region X quarterfinals in 2024-25, competed well versus ranked teams, recruited and mentored an all-region honorable mention guard, and guided four student-athletes to four-year basketball programs.

Curry said his game plan is ready for execution, and he is anxious to begin building his Southwestern program.

“My goal is to bring contagious energy to the community and staff while building a women’s program rooted in high character, hard work, and accountability—both on- and off-the-court,” Curry stated. “I want our team to represent SWCC with pride by putting an honest, competitive product on the floor and in the community that the college and the state of Iowa can be proud of.”

When his team is in place, Curry is hopeful Southwestern’s communities will support the student-athletes.

“We will aim to consistently compete for Region 11 championships while developing the winning habits and culture that will restore SWCC women’s basketball to its full potential,” Curry said.

Southwestern athletic administrators were equally excited when they found Curry’s resume in the pile.

Cole Higgins, Southwestern athletic director, said, “We are incredibly excited for Ty to direct and lead our women’s basketball program. It was clear early on during the interview process that Ty was our choice. His professionalism and knowledge made him a standout from the beginning.”

Prior to coaching at the collegiate level, Curry was an assistant high school basketball coach at Doherty High School, a 6A school in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He has coached travel teams and has assisted at summer basketball camps in Colorado.

Curry earned a Master of Science degree in sports leadership from Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts; a Bachelor of Arts degree in human development & family studies, with a minor in psychology from Metropolitan State University of Denver in Aurora, Colorado; and an Associate of Arts degree in psychology from Pikes Peak State College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was also a scholarship student-athlete at Nebraska Christian College in Papillion, Nebraska.

Curry will begin recruiting for the program immediately.
