The Southwestern Community College softball team earned a split on Saturday at FunCity Turf, opening the day with a 10–4 win over Highland Community College - Kansas before dropping a 13–0 decision in five innings to Black Hawk College.
Southwestern set the tone early in the opener against Highland, scoring in five of seven innings to secure its first win of the day. The Spartans collected 11 hits and took advantage of four Highland errors, showing consistent pressure on the basepaths and in the middle of the lineup.
Clara O'Brien led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, driving in two runs and adding a double. Sydney Cain went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, an RBI, and a double, while Matea Warren chipped in two RBIs. Bailey Hosbach added a pair of hits, scored twice, and drove in a run.
In the circle, Hosbach went the distance, allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out five to earn the win. After Highland briefly took an early lead, Southwestern answered immediately and never relinquished control, pulling away with a two-run seventh to seal the 10–4 victory.
In the nightcap, the Spartans ran into a strong Black Hawk lineup that scored in each of the first four innings. Black Hawk built an early cushion with six runs through the first two frames and added a six-run third to put the game out of reach.
Joslyn Policky recorded Southwestern's lone hit, while Monserrat Velarde and Matea Warren combined in the circle. Despite the setback, the Spartans continued to compete through five innings against a deep Black Hawk roster.
Southwestern will look to build on the offensive momentum from the opener as the Spartans continue early-season play.
