Southwestern announces the signing of two-time Iowa state champion Keith Thompson.

Southwestern Community College Head Golf Coach Doug North has announced the signing of Hamburg native Keith Thompson, a two-time IHSAA Class 1A individual state champion and one of the most decorated prep golfers in southwest Iowa. Thompson, a standout from Hamburg Charter High School, will join the Spartans beginning in Fall 2026.

Thompson arrives at Southwestern with a résumé that places him among the top incoming freshmen in the region. He captured back-to-back Class 1A individual state titles, including his most recent championship performance where he posted rounds of 74–71 (145, +1) to secure the 2025 crown. His final-round 71 vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard, completing a two-year run in which he established himself as the premier small-school golfer in Iowa. His tournament record also includes a victory at the Dale Erickson Memorial, firing a 69 to win by a stroke, along with multiple district and conference rounds in the 67–69 range. He has been named KMA Golfer of the Year three times.

Thompson's personal scoring benchmarks underscore his competitive ceiling, boasting a career-best 58 for 18 holes and 28 for 9 holes, with current averages of 34 and 70 in high-school competition. He identifies his iron play as the foundation of his game, a strength that has translated consistently in state and postseason tournaments. Thompson credits his grandfather for introducing him to golf at age two, and lists Fremont County Golf Course as his home course. His development has been guided by swing instructor Randy Thompson.

Beyond ability, Thompson expressed a strong personal connection with SWCC during recruiting, citing "good cost, my brother Hayden playing here, and a great coach" as key factors in choosing the Spartans. He noted that Coach North "felt like the only coach that actually cares about me as a person, not just as a golfer." Thompson's goals include competing for tournament wins immediately while continuing to grow academically with aspirations to transfer to a four-year program after his time at Southwestern.

Coach North praised Thompson's combination of talent and competitiveness, noting that his championship pedigree and scoring profile align well with the program's trajectory. Thompson is expected to make an impact from day one as Southwestern prepares for the 2026–27 season.

Thompson is the son of Jennifer and Derek Thompson and has three siblings: Hayden, Hilda, and Kooper. Off the course, he has participated in basketball, enjoys social studies, and—less known to many—is "pretty good at darts." He lists Scottie Scheffler as his favorite professional golfer, admiring his quiet competitiveness.
