MASON CITY, Iowa – September 9, 2025 – The Southwestern Community College men's golf team turned in a record-setting performance Tuesday at the NIACC Fall Invitational, hosted at Highland Park Golf Course. The Spartans posted a team score of 272 (-16) to secure the tournament title, setting a new school record in the process.
Sophomore Freddie Muggeridge and freshman Shane Sweeney shared medalist honors after each carded rounds of 66, also establishing a new individual school record. Muggeridge earned the victory on a scorecard playoff, highlighted by seven birdies and an eagle. Sweeney's round was powered by an albatross on the par-5 sixth hole and four additional birdies.
Freshman Lake Elling added a top-10 finish of his own with a steady round that included five birdies, helping push the Spartans to their historic team mark.
Head coach Doug North credited his team's aggressive play for the record-breaking day.
"I'm proud of these guys today," North said. "We knew this course fielded a great opportunity, but wasn't quite expecting that much red on the scorecards."
Through three events this fall, Southwestern has placed fourth of 20 teams, tied for first of 10, and now first of 16, showing early consistency against competitive fields.
The Spartans return to action Thursday, September 18, at the Graceland Fall Invitational in Lamoni, Iowa.
