Creston, IA – Southwestern Community College men's golf continued its fall season on familiar ground, hosting the annual War at the Moor at Crestmoor Golf Club on Thursday. The Spartans delivered a strong performance, tying for first place in the team competition before falling to Iowa Central on a fifth-man card back.
Southwestern's "A" team posted a score of +3, paced by sophomore Freddie Muggeridge, who claimed medalist honors with an impressive finish. Muggeridge, a returning NJCAA All-American, birdied the final hole after holing an eagle on No. 17 to secure his first career collegiate victory at 3-under-par 68.
"Freddie showed the kind of closing ability you hope to see in a leader," said Head Coach Doug North. "It was good for us to show some grit today. We finished our final few holes really well. We've got some youth on this team, so being in a battle will bode well for us in the future."
Behind Muggeridge, freshman Lake Elling fired an even-par 72 to place in the top 10, while sophomore Shane Sweeney carded a 73 to sit among the crowded tie for 10th. Freshman Hayden Thompson (80) and sophomore Elliot Lorentzon (77) rounded out the lineup.
Southwestern's "B" team also made its mark, tying for seventh place with Mineral Area's "B" team at +19. The Spartans had four players inside the top 40, led by Justin Miller's 73.
In total, 10 schools competed in the event, including Iowa Central, Iowa Lakes, Metropolitan CC, Mineral Area (MO), North Central Missouri, and Simpson College's JV.
Southwestern now turns its attention to the NIACC Invitational, scheduled for September 9 in Mason City, Iowa.
