The Southwestern Spartan sports shooting team hosted Iowa Western on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 17, 2019, at the High Lakes Shooting Range in Afton. The Spartans came up short losing 483 to 455.
High scores for the Spartans were Tyllar Roesener–93, Morgan Pierce–92, Makenna Lilly-91, Courtney Nielsen–90, and Dakota Johnson–89. The Southwestern men did not medal, but in the women’s division, Lilly took the gold and Nielsen took the silver.
Following competition, Southwestern Head Coach Marc Roberg said, "We did not shoot particularly well against a very good Iowa Western team. Sometimes this happens after coming off a very good shooting performance, which we had a week ago against Grand View. Shooting is a mental game and you have to be mentally ready for every mach. We weren’t today."
Roberg pointed out there were some bright spots during the competition. Johnson shot a personal best of 89. He had 24/25 on two consecutive houses.
"A little more work and Dakota could see that be a 93 or 94," Roberg stated. "And Makenna and Courtney continue to medal in just about every meet."
Southwestern will host Northwest Missouri State University in a non-conference shoot on Monday night, October 21, at the High Lakes Shooting Range, starting at 5 p.m.
