The Southwestern sports shooting team hosted Iowa Lakes Community College in their opening shoot of the 2018-19 season at the High Lakes Outdoor Alliance Shooting Range in Afton. The Spartans came out on top defeating Iowa Lakes 462 to 456.
Southwestern swept the top five places in the women’s division. Medalists were Courtney Nielsen, freshman of Blair, NE, first place with a 95; Casey Allen, freshman of Afton, second place with a 92; and Makenna Lilly, freshman of Bridgewater, third place following a shoot-off against teammate Jessica Aupperle, sophomore of Wiota, after each shooter finished with a 91.
In the men’s division, Ethan Collins of Iowa Lakes took first with a 99. Southwestern's Tyllar Roesener, freshman of Cook, NE, defeated his teammate Blake Binns, sophomore of Winterset, in a shoot-off to take second. Binns then finished in third. Both had a score of 92.
The sum of the top five scores make the team score. Targets are shot from the 16-yard line.

In the handicap event, Clell Beason won the event with a 47 out of 50. Blake Binns followed with 42; Courtney Nielsen, 38; Dalton Smith, 36; and Kyle Redinbaugh, 35, for a score of 198. Handicap targets are shot from the 25-yard line. Iowa Lakes did not shoot the handicap event.
The Spartans travel to Grand View University next on Monday, Sept. 17, and host Southeastern CC at the High Lakes Outdoor Alliance Shooting Range on Saturday, Sept. 22. The home shoot starts at 10 a.m.
