Creston, IA—Creston native Saige Rice will be donning a Spartan uniform next year after signing a National Letter of Intent earlier this week to play for Head Coach Nick Weinmeister and the Southwestern Community College softball program.
Rice will graduate from Creston High School in May 2019. She is a four-sport letter winner and has participated in volleyball, softball, cross country, basketball, and track. During high school, she has earned Hawkeye Ten Honorable Mention, Hawkeye Ten Second Team All-Conference, All-Western Iowa Honorable Mention, and All-Western Iowa Second Team. She is an academic letter winner as well.
Weinmeister is anxious to gain Rice's glove in his outfield.
"Saige will come in and help us right away in the outfield," Weinmeister said. "I also look for her to bring some more pop to our offensive lineup."
Weinmeister, a first-year coach at Southwestern, said he hopes Rice's experience at Southwestern will resonate with other local softball talent.
"As a new coach at SWCC and in the Creston community, it was imperative I establish recruiting traction locally," Weinmeister stated. "Saige was one of the first players in this area that I started recruiting and I could not be happier she has decided to stay in Creston and attend Southwestern."
She is the daughter of Jason and Shantelle Rice of Creston.
