Southwestern Head Cross Country/Track and Field Coach Trey Bruton recently announced the addition of Leland Perkins to the Cross Country and Track & Field teams for the 2020-21 seasons.
Perkins, of Kansas City, Missouri, attended classes and competed for Hogan Preperatory. He signed his National Letter of Intent with the Spartans on a zoom meeting with family, coaches, teachers, and Friends in attendance.
Perkins, specializes in the middle distance and distance events. He has recorded a personal best time of 5:36 in the 1,600 meter run and was a member of Hogan's first ever state qualifying 4x800m relay team. This is the 4th student athlete in the last two years from Hogan that has joined the Spartan team, but the first distance runner.
"Leland has some strong support from his family and friends and will no doubt succeed at the collegiate level," Bruton said. "From conversations with his mother and Coach Roosevelt Gipson at Hogan, we know we are getting a good student athlete that is going to come here and work hard for us the entire year and just make himself better all around, both in and out of the classroom. He has a lot of raw natural talent and we look forward to helping him hone in on his abilities and really help him succeed in his time here."
