The Southwestern softball team took to the road in the first scrimmage of the year, against Grand View University. The Spartan coaching staff chose to challenge the young team in different positions to see how they perform. Nick Weinmeister, head coach and assistant coach, Casey-May Huff, had this to say about the day: "Overall, it was good to get back on the field to compete against somebody else. We had a lot of players hitting and playing in positions that weren't necessarily their normal spots. It gave the us a chance to see what we are working with. In all, today was a good indication of where we are at and where we need to be. We are excited to get back on the field for our game at home on Wednesday."

The Southwestern baseball team had the opportunity, after a Thursday rainout, to take to the field as well. The Spartans got to see in-conference rival, Indian Hills Community College. The Spartan coaching staff, optimistic about a young, talented team had this to say about their day in Creston: "Very positive day for the first scrimmage of the fall. Many freshmen got a chance to see what college baseball really is, and the rose to the occasion. The offense clicked well at times. We played very good defense for where we are in the year. It is very cool to see the level of compete across the board. Freshman arms joined in with some sophomores to limit hills to minimal runs. The energy at Spartan stadium way fantastic. It is a fun group; they work hard day in and day out. I'm very excited to see what the group becomes!"
