Southwestern Splits in Lexington

The Spartans traveled to Lexington, MO, on Friday night to participate in a triangular against Labette Community College and Wentworth Military Academy & College.  Southwestern played Labette earlier this season, and were defeated in three sets.  This time the Spartans would get the best of Labette, taking them down in five sets.

Both middles Sydney Maynes and Brooke Decker contributed nine kills each in the win.  Ashley Kopplin tallied 35 digs in the match while Taylor Damewood racked up 18 assists.  Maynes also put down six blocks in the effort.

The Wentworth match went into five sets and the Spartans would come up short.  The Red Dragons proved to be to strong late by dominating the fourth set and jumping to an early six-point lead in the fifth.

Jade Petersen led the Spartans in hitting this match with 12 kills, 11 through the first three sets.  Damewood had 22 assists in the effort while Kopplin received 22 digs.  Decker and Maynes each put up five blocks.

Post-season play will start on Wednesday for the Spartans and will travel to Fort Dodge to take on Iowa Central Community College.  The Tritons beat Southwestern in their previous match up in four sets.  The winner will advance to the second round of the conference tournament, which will be played in Creston on Saturday.
