Southwestern Community College recently announced Martin (Marty) Maynes of Des Moines as the head coach for the Spartans softball program.

Maynes has most recently been the head softball coach and a softball instructor for Iowa Premier Fastpitch in Des Moines. He has served in this role for the past four years.  Maynes has coached multiple teams at PGF Nationals, the power pool at Sparkler, and World Fastpitch Championships.

Maynes will begin recruiting for his 2017-18 Spartan softball roster immediately.

Todd Lorensen, Southwestern athletic director, said Maynes has already begun conversations with potential players, but would love to hear from more who may be interested in playing collegiate softball.

"Coach Maynes has many relationships with four-year college coaches from his time with Iowa Premier," Lorensen explained. "These connections will be an asset to current and future players at Southwestern."

Lorensen said Southwestern has already inked Lenox softball standout Jacy Stoaks, who has played first base throughout high school, and Dallas Center-Grimes outfielder Shelby Freestone, for the Spartans 2017-18 roster.

Maynes earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Grand View University in Des Moines.
